Charles Castronovo: The Rocker Turned Opera Star

Rising among the ranks as one of the top lyric tenors, it only takes a couple of bars to hear why Charles Castronovo has already an impressive resume amongst the top opera houses worldwide. His voice is warm and enveloping echoing the days of one of his role models Nicolai Gedda. It’s a perfect marriage of size and sound; a marriage he now carries out in Aix-de-Provence, France where he resides. France seems a perfect place for the young American tenor to lay down roots as it is in his French repertoire which he is particularly known for.

Raised in California to Sicilian and Ecuadorian parents, Castronovo originally wanted to be a rock singer. It wasn’t until high school that a clever music teacher got him to join the school choir, where he listened to Plácido Domingo sing the opening to Verdi’s Otello, that he decided opera was what he wanted to do.

Listening to Castronovo one is able to see that beyond the promising career, here is a man who is very much grounded on what’s important in life. Married to fellow soprano Ekaterina Siuriana, Castronovo now balances married life and fatherhood with performing in the top opera houses all over the world like Covent Garden, The Metropolitan Opera, Staatsoper Berlin and the Vienna State Opera to name a few.

Most recently, he starred in the world premier of late composer Daniel Catán’s opera Il Postino, based on the novel by Antonio Skármeta opposite the man himself Plácido Domingo at his alma mater the Los Angeles Opera. But the countless debuts don’t go to his head. Although he has ambitions to make solo recordings, he doesn’t take himself too seriously. His pre-performance regimen include playing the guitar and listening to The Beatles.

Castronovo forms part of that generation of new opera singers breaking down stereotypes luring new audiences to the opera house with their looks and keeping them coming back with sheer talent. If this is what it takes for opera to change we say, bring it!
