The 10 Movies I Always Take With Me When I Travel Abroad

Whenever I travel abroad for a long period of time, I always bring with me my trusty red Case Logic 24-CD case, full of my favorite comfort DVDs. Many DVDs have come and gone out of this case since I first used it while living in Italy in 2003, but these 10 DVDs have made my list of “must-brings” for awhile now.

You can learn a lot about me from this list.

  1. Pretty Woman – a go to comfort film for me since childhood. Yes, my favorite movie as a kid was about a prostitute.
  2. Finding Nemo – Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.
  3. Saving Face – Pregnant mother and gay daughter bond in Chinese.
  4. The Santa Clause – Santa is real and it makes me happy.
  5. Cinema Paradiso – A kid, a mentor and a movie theater. All in Italian.
  6. But I’m a Cheerleader – Kitschy gay rehab gone bad. Or good, depending on your point of view.
  7. Sleeping Beauty – Flora, Flauna and Merriweather are my heroes.
  8. Monster’s Inc. – Adorable concept, adorable storyline, adorable monsters.
  9. Christmas Vacation – I know everyone thinks their father is Clark Griswold but mine really is.
  10. 50 First Dates – I’d make Drew Barrymore fall in love with me every day.

Maybe one day I’ll embrace the digital age and put these DVDs on my computer, but until then, when I go abroad, so do they.

What are some of your favorite must-bring comfort movies when traveling abroad?
